What is the deal with needing to have health insurance starting in 2007?
Massachusetts has decided to further penalize taxpayers who are uninsured as to health insurance by taking away their personal exemption on their tax return. We are not sure how hurting someone on their tax return will help the unfortunate person without health insurance but we do not make the rules.
Most of our clients have health insurance.
Having Medicare coverage qualifies as health insurance so for those of you on Medicare, we need nothing further.
For those of you who have health insurance coverage, your provider should be sending a form by January 31, 2008 reflecting such coverage. To complete your tax return we need the information on that form; the name of the provider, the federal identification number of the provider, and the name and subscriber number of the subscriber (the subscriber may by the wife versus the husband, or perhaps the parent). BEST BET - provide us that form.
For those of you who do not have health insurance for religious reasons, please let us know. While this sounds like an invasion of your privacy, again, we do not make the rules.
