Health, Long Term Care and Medicare Insurance Premiums

Health Insurance Premiums are tax deductible in one of three ways:

 As an itemized deduction.

If nothing else, perhaps you will get a deduction for your health insurance premiums as an itemized deduction. For many taxpayers, their medical expenses including health insurance premiums don’t add up to enough to get a benefit from itemizing. However, for others the fact that they pay for their own health insurance (an early retiree for example, or a person between jobs) is just what it takes to get their medical deductions over the threshold to get a tax benefit.
